Prevage MD Antioxidant Cream
NEW YORK, Sept. 28 -- With the beauty industry exceeding $31 billion in sales in 2003, it is inevitable that women may stumble across a product or two that isn't up to snuff. Driving this billion-dollar business are thousands of new product launches every year. Allure's ninth annual Best of Beauty issue takes the frustrating trial and error out of finding a mascara that lengthens and thickens, a lip gloss that isn't sticky like glue, and a moisturizer filled with antioxidants and SPF-saving consumers time and money.
This year, Allure's editors and more than 4,000 readers awarded the Best of Beauty seal to 147 products, including Pantene Pro-V Conditioner, the only contender to win nine years straight. Some of the winners would be worthy of a Nobel prize for beauty, if one existed. They are the most scientifically advanced products available, including a body wash that leaves skin as hydrated as a conventional body lotion and a sugar molecule-based wrinkle filler for the face. Here's a look at some of the winning products:
- Neutrogena Advanced Solutions Facial Peel says it improves sun-damaged skin as effectively as a doctor-administered 20 percent glycolic-acid peel-and Allure editors found it did that without the red or raw side effects.
- Prevage MD by Allergan contains an antioxidant called idebenone that helps prevent the sun damage to skin cells that can lead to wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Clinical studies have found it reduces fine lines and wrinkles by 29 percent in six weeks. Allure editors found that after a month, Prevage MD had already softened their crow's-feet.
- Crest Whitestrips Premium was chosen as the Best Teeth Whitener by Allure's readers for speeding up the process of its original two-week strips by increasing the hydrogen-peroxide concentration from 6 to 10 percent and decreasing the treatment time to seven days, twice a day, for 30 minutes.
- Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 feels like an ultralight lotion with the UVA and UVB protection of a sunscreen, while still delivering as much coverage as a sheer foundation.
- L'Oreal Double Extend Mascara has a basecoat on one end that lengthens and thickens, and pigment on the other, extending lashes by up to 60 percent without adding clumps, and left Allure editors wimpy fringe as full as fakes.
- Shiseido The Makeup Enriched Loose Powder is colorless and disappears instantly on skin, which makes it impossible to buy the wrong shade.
- Murad Vitalic Energizing Pomegranate Cleanser, filled with pomegranate antioxidants, washes away dirt and makeup.
- Essie The Cuticle Pen dispenses moisture to dry, cracked cuticles with precision, thanks to a creamy mix of apricot, jojoba, and primose oils -- and stays where you put it.
Allure is the only women's magazine dedicated to beauty and is read monthly by nearly 5 million American women interested in the news, trends, and facts about cosmetics, fragrance, skin and hair care, and how they impact a woman's image.
