Prevage MD Antioxidant Cream
The Style section is bombarded weekly by press releases and samples of new anti-aging products, each boasting that its use will help women appear more youthful and perhaps slow down the physical signs of getting older.
Two products, Prevage MD and Hydroderm, have been getting lots of attention since their introduction a few months ago, in magazines and by celebs touting their effectiveness. The makers of both say that their formulations penetrate the skin better than many other creams and potions being sold.
Prevage MD, made by Allergan, is an antioxidant cream that the company says reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and protects against environmental damage from sun and air pollution. Its main ingredient is idebenone, a compound that the company says penetrates skin more than other creams. It is a relative of Co-Enzyme Q10, a popular antioxidant.
InStyle magazine gave Prevage MD a thumbs up, quoting a doctor saying, ``This is a fascinating ingredient because it's extremely effective but very safe. It has the potential to be one of the major new skin-care ingredients.''
Allure magazine recently rated it one of the ``Best of Beauty Breakthroughs,'' and it was included in celebrity gift baskets at recent award shows.
``The best way to describe Prevage MD is that, as an antioxidant, it prevents further `rust' -- it won't erase what's happened, but over time, you'll see a faint reduction in fine lines,'' says Dr. Seth Matarasso, a professor of dermatology at the University of California-San Francisco with a private practice near Union Square. ``Over time, you might see more suppleness to the skin and a small reduction in wrinkles and sunspots.''
